Τσουγκράνα και μια ρέγγα εδά, τραπέζι δίχως πλούτη
μα γέλια, κέφια και καρδιές αξίζουνε τα πλούτη.
Μια εικόνα που κουβαλά μνήμη, παράδοση και αλήθεια. Η τσουγκράνα του καζανάρη, εκείνη που σηκώνει τα στράφυλα από το καζάνι της τσικουδιάς, γίνεται εδώ στήριγμα μιας απλής ρέγγας. Ένα λιτό κέρασμα, γνώριμο στους ανθρώπους του μόχθου, που δεν μετριέται με την αφθονία του τραπεζιού, αλλά με την αξία της συντροφιάς.
Στην Κρήτη, το «Άγιον Στάλαγμα» δεν είναι μόνο η πρώτη σταγόνα της τσικουδιάς. Είναι η ευλογία της παρέας, το μοίρασμα, η φιλοξενία, το γέλιο που γεννιέται γύρω από το καζάνι και κάνει το λίγο να μοιάζει πολύ.
Αυτή τη μικρή ιστορία αφηγείται η φωτογραφία, μία από τις εικόνες της έκθεσης «Το Άγιον Στάλαγμα» του Νίκου Μπασιά, που θα παρουσιαστεί στη LOTOS Open Art Gallery, στη Σούγια. Μια έκθεση αφιερωμένη στους ανθρώπους, στα έθιμα και στις στιγμές που κρατούν ζωντανή την ψυχή της κρητικής παράδοσης.

A pitchfork and a herring; a table stripped of luxury—
yet laughter, companionship, and generous hearts are riches beyond all measure.
At first glance, the image appears disarmingly simple: a herring pierced by the pitchfork once used by the kazanaris to lift the fermented grape pomace from the still during the distillation of tsikoudia. Yet within this humble composition lies an entire world of memory, labour, and ritual.
Here, everyday objects become symbols. The pitchfork speaks of harvest and toil; the herring recalls the modest meals that sustained generations. Together, they evoke the timeless gatherings around the still, where hospitality was measured not by abundance, but by generosity, shared stories, and the quiet joy of being together.
In Crete, “The Holy Drop” is more than the first crystal drop of tsikoudia. It is a celebration of heritage, friendship, and the sacred beauty found in ordinary moments.
