Το “Άγιον Στάλαγμα”
Μια φωτογραφική αναζήτηση στην καρδιά της κρητικής παράδοσης.

Υπάρχουν φωτογραφικά θέματα που τα επιλέγεις και άλλα που σε επιλέγουν. Τα κρητικά καζανέματα ανήκουν στη δεύτερη κατηγορία. Κάθε φθινόπωρο, στα χωριά της Κρήτης, άνθρωποι διαφορετικών ηλικιών συγκεντρώνονται γύρω από το καζάνι για να συνεχίσουν μια παράδοση που μεταδίδεται από γενιά σε γενιά. Εκεί γεννήθηκε η ανάγκη να δημιουργηθεί η φωτογραφική ενότητα «Το Άγιον Στάλαγμα».

Η εργασία αυτή είναι αποτέλεσμα πολυετούς φωτογραφικής καταγραφής σε καζάνια σε ολόκληρη την Κρήτη. Δεν αποτελεί ντοκουμέντο της διαδικασίας της απόσταξης, αλλά μια προσπάθεια να αποτυπωθεί η ατμόσφαιρα, οι άνθρωποι και η βαθύτερη σημασία μιας παράδοσης που εξακολουθεί να κρατά ζωντανή την κοινωνική συνοχή της κρητικής υπαίθρου.

Ο φακός δεν εστιάζει μόνο στη φωτιά, στους ατμούς και στο πρώτο στάλαγμα της τσικουδιάς. Στέκεται στα βλέμματα των καζανάρηδων, στα χέρια που εργάζονται με τον ίδιο τρόπο εδώ και δεκαετίες, στα γέλια της παρέας, στις ευχές που συνοδεύουν το πρώτο ποτήρι και στη σιωπή που πολλές φορές λέει περισσότερα από τις λέξεις.

Για τους Κρητικούς, η τσικουδιά δεν είναι απλώς ένα παραδοσιακό απόσταγμα. Είναι σύμβολο φιλοξενίας, επικοινωνίας και μνήμης. Συνοδεύει τις χαρές, απαλύνει τις λύπες, ανοίγει συζητήσεις και φέρνει κοντά ανθρώπους που ίσως να μην είχαν ποτέ άλλη αφορμή να συναντηθούν. Αυτήν ακριβώς τη σχέση ανθρώπου και παράδοσης επιχειρούν να αφηγηθούν οι φωτογραφίες της σειράς.

Η έκθεση παρουσιάζεται στη LOTOS Open Art Gallery στη Σούγια Χανίων, έναν υπαίθριο εκθεσιακό χώρο που προσφέρει μια διαφορετική εμπειρία θέασης. Οι εικόνες εκτίθενται κάτω από τον ανοιχτό ουρανό, όπου το φυσικό φως της ημέρας και η ατμόσφαιρα της νύχτας μεταμορφώνουν διαρκώς τον τρόπο με τον οποίο ο θεατής τις προσεγγίζει. Η αντίθεση ανάμεσα στη φωτιά των ορεινών καζανιών και στη θαλασσινή αύρα της Σούγιας δημιουργεί έναν ιδιαίτερο διάλογο ανάμεσα στον τόπο όπου γεννήθηκαν οι εικόνες και στον τόπο όπου παρουσιάζονται.”

Το «Άγιον Στάλαγμα» δεν είναι μόνο μια έκθεση φωτογραφίας. Είναι μια πρόσκληση να γνωρίσουμε μια από τις πιο αυθεντικές εκφράσεις της κρητικής ταυτότητας και να θυμηθούμε ότι η παράδοση δεν επιβιώνει μέσα στα μουσεία, αλλά στους ανθρώπους που συνεχίζουν να τη ζουν.

The “Holy Drop”
A photographic journey into the heart of Cretan tradition

There are photographic subjects that you choose, and others that choose you. The traditional Cretan distillation gatherings belong to the second category. Every autumn, in the villages of Crete, people of different generations come together around the still, continuing a tradition passed down from one generation to the next. It was there that the photographic series “The Holy Drop” was born.

This body of work is the result of years of photographic exploration in distillation gatherings throughout Crete. It is not simply a documentation of the process of making tsikoudia, but an attempt to capture the atmosphere, the people, and the deeper meaning of a tradition that continues to preserve the social bonds of the Cretan countryside.

The camera does not focus only on the fire, the rising steam, and the first precious drops of the spirit. It observes the faces of the distillers, the hands that have followed the same gestures for decades, the laughter of friends gathered around the fire, the wishes shared with the first glass, and the moments of silence that often speak louder than words.

For Cretans, tsikoudia is not merely a traditional drink. It is a symbol of hospitality, communication, and collective memory. It accompanies celebrations, offers comfort in difficult moments, opens conversations, and brings people together. It is this relationship between people and tradition that these photographs seek to narrate.

The exhibition is presented at LOTOS Open Art Gallery in Sougia, Chania, an open-air exhibition space that offers a unique way of experiencing photography. The images are displayed beneath the open sky, where the changing natural light of the day and the atmosphere of the night continuously transform the viewer’s experience. The contrast between the fire of the mountain distilleries and the sea breeze of Sougia creates a unique dialogue between the place where these images were born and the place where they are presented.

“The Holy Drop” is not simply a photography exhibition. It is an invitation to discover one of the most authentic expressions of Cretan identity and to remember that tradition does not survive only inside museums, but through the people who continue to live it.
