Κάθε σχολείο είναι ένας μικρός ναός της παιδικής ηλικίας, ένα ιερό αποτύπωμα του χρόνου που μάς διαμόρφωσε, περιμένοντας ένα βλέμμα, έναν φακό, μια ψυχή πρόθυμη να σταθεί, να αφουγκραστεί, να θυμηθεί.
Κι αυτά βρέθηκαν στο πρόσωπο του διακεκριμένου Χανιώτη φωτογράφου και καθηγητή Νίκου Μπασιά, που για περισσότερα από 13 χρόνια, φωτογραφίζει σχολεία ρημαγμένα ή παρατημένα σε διαφορετικές γωνιές της Ελλάδας.
«Η ιδέα του project “Από τον Βορρά στον Νότο – Στα Χνάρια της Μνήμης” -τονίζει μιλώντας στην “Π”- γεννήθηκε βιωματικά και όχι ως προσχεδιασμένο φωτογραφικό εγχείρημα. Προέκυψε από τη μακρόχρονη σχέση μου σαν καθηγητής με τον χώρο του σχολείου και από την εμπειρία της μετάβασης από τη ζωντάνια των γεμάτων αιθουσών, στη σιωπή των εγκαταλελειμμένων κτηρίων.
Η πρώτη συνάντηση με ένα παλιό σχολείο δεν λειτούργησε ως εικόνα εγκατάλειψης, αλλά ως αίσθηση συμπυκνωμένου χρόνου. Εκεί γεννήθηκε η ανάγκη να σταθώ απέναντι σε αυτούς τους χώρους με τη φωτογραφία, όχι για να τους καταγράψω, αλλά για να αφουγκραστώ ό,τι είχε απομείνει. Σταδιακά, η φωτογραφία μετατράπηκε σε εργαλείο μνήμης και προσωπικής αναζήτησης.
Με τα χρόνια, αυτή η διαδρομή ξάνοιξε και χώρεσε ολόκληρη την Ελλάδα την Κύπρο και τη Σμύρνη, βασισμένη συχνά στην προφορική μνήμη και στις αφηγήσεις των ανθρώπων». «Η ένταξη σχολείων της Σμύρνης -συνεχίζει ο κ. Μπασιάς- δεν έγινε για να διευρύνει γεωγραφικά τη διαδρομή, αλλά για να επεκτείνει το πεδίο της μνήμης. Η Σμύρνη αποτελεί έναν τόπο έντονα φορτισμένο ιστορικά και συναισθηματικά».
Μάλιστα, του έχει γίνει πρόταση να παρουσιαστεί η έκθεση «Από τον Βορρά στον Νότο – Στα Χνάρια της Μνήμης», στη Σμύρνη. Ο φακός του γνωστού καλλιτέχνη εστιάζει κυρίως στα δημοτικά σχολεία, γιατί συμπυκνώνουν κάτι πολύ περισσότερο από την εκπαιδευτική τους λειτουργία. Είναι ο πρώτος δημόσιος χώρος που βιώνουμε ως παιδιά, ο τόπος όπου διαμορφώνονται οι πρώτες συλλογικές εμπειρίες, οι πρώτες μνήμες έξω από το οικογενειακό πλαίσιο.

Every school is a small temple of childhood, a sacred imprint of the time that shaped us, waiting for a gaze, a lens, a soul willing to pause, to listen, to remember.
These were found in the person of the distinguished photographer and educator from Chania, Nikos Basias, who for more than 13 years has been photographing schools that have fallen into ruin or been abandoned in different corners of Greece.
“The idea for the project ‘From North to South – In the Footsteps of Memory’,” he emphasizes while speaking to ‘P’, “was born experientially and not as a pre-planned photographic endeavor. It emerged from my long-standing relationship with the school environment as a teacher, and from the experience of moving from the liveliness of full classrooms to the silence of abandoned buildings.
My first encounter with an old school did not function as an image of abandonment, but as a sensation of condensed time. That was where the need was born to stand before these spaces with photography—not to document them, but to listen to what remained. Gradually, photography was transformed into a tool of memory and personal exploration.
Over the years, this journey opened up and came to encompass the whole of Greece, Cyprus, and Smyrna, often based on oral memory and people’s narratives.”
“The inclusion of schools in Smyrna,” Mr. Basias continues, “was not meant to geographically expand the route, but to broaden the field of memory. Smyrna is a place intensely charged both historically and emotionally.”
In fact, he has received a proposal for the exhibition ‘From North to South – In the Footsteps of Memory’ to be presented in Smyrna. The lens of the well-known artist focuses mainly on primary schools, because they condense something far greater than their educational function. They are the first public space we experience as children, the place where our first collective experiences are formed, our first memories outside the family framework.
“At the same time, as an educator,” he notes, “I had a special relationship with the school not only as a building, but as a living organism. When these schools ceased to operate, I did not see them as empty shells, but as spaces charged with children’s voices, rhythms, and stories. Their silence was not emptiness; it was memory.”
The aim of the exhibition is not to provoke nostalgia, nor simply to record abandonment. Without accusation or didacticism, it raises questions about care, preservation, and the reintegration of these spaces into contemporary life.
It is also significant that the exhibition was hosted in traditional cafés, from the North in Chania to the South in Sougia, bringing the photographs closer to local communities and strengthening direct, living communication with viewers.
