“Medals of Honor” in Voukolies

Solo exhibitionMEDALS OF HONORat the Voukolies Cultural Center.
The “Medal of Honor” photo series consists of 30 photographs of various dimensions, produced in 2021, printed on a mixed, archival cotton canvas, created in studios especially to honor the heroes and their actions during the evolution of the Revolution of 1821.

Curator Dr. Konstantinos V. Proimos notes: “In this photo series, Nikos Basias conducts an interesting and unusual experiment. He photographs paintings by Nikolaos Gyzis, Theodoros Vryzakis, Theofilos and other artists, which record the successful outcome of the struggle of the Greeks for their independence in 1821 and are widely circulated in books and commemorative albums. With most of these images being photographed, the audience is familiar because they have seen them many times.

Basias photographs the images after taking them out of the freezer forming a round ice frame so that they recall the shape of the Medal of Honor.
What is striking about Basia, however, is the way he sets up his photographs as still lifes, placing readymades next to them, ready-made objects, making his photographs “theoretical objects”, heterogeneous works or tools for deconstructing the established and established photographic practice that was supported. in the value of the autonomy of the medium .

The exhibition is accompanied by a color bilingual catalog (Greek, English) in which the participating works are presented along with documentation texts, analyzes and comments of the artist and the curators as well as welcomes of the Deputy Regional Governor of Chania, Mr. Nikolaos Kalogeris and the Mayor, Ioannis Malandrakis.
